Welcome and thank you for joining my fantasy AFL draft league! For most of us (myself included), this will be the first time we have played this form of fantasy AFL. I hope to share some of what I know so far about how to play.
WHAT IS "DRAFT"?
Basically everyone takes turns to pick a player for their team. Each player can only be owned by one team. There is no salary cap so players are not assigned dollar values.
You need to pick 3 defenders, 4 midfielders, 1 ruck, 3 forwards and 4 emergencies for your team.
WHAT SHOULD I DO BEFORE THE DRAFT
Although it is not necessary, it is highly advisable that you do a pre-draft list before draft day. You will only have two minutes to make your pick so a pre-draft list will help you keep a cool head during your decision making. If you fail to make your pick during the allotted two minutes, you will be assigned your highest ranked available player on your pre-draft list. Remember, any number of unforeseen things can happen during the draft (eg. internet problems) so it is best to have a pre-draft list.
To make your list, click on the draft tab on your home page, then click on our draft league name. That should take you to a page with a list of players called the Player Pool. Click the plus button next to the player you want the most and his name should then be added to the box headed "My Pre-Draft List". Then click the plus sign next to the second player your want most and his name will go underneath your first pick. Keep going until you have a large number of players in your pre-draft list. This is because a lot of players you pick will have been claimed by other teams before you get to pick them. In my list I have ordered a mixture of 20 defenders, 35 midfielders, 7 rucks and 20 forwards.
DURING THE DRAFT
Our draft will be held on Sunday 19 March at 3pm EAST. The order in which we pick was computer generated and I had absolutely no control over who got each draft pick. So our draft order is:
ROUND ONE
1. Leroy
2. Tom
3. Dugal
4. Mozz
5. Sardene
6. Jazz
ROUND TWO
7. Jazz
8. Sardene
9. Mozz
10. Dugal
11. Tom
12. Leroy
Our draft then follows that order until all off our teams are full.
You will have only two minutes to make your selection. If you are able to attend the draft you will be able to pick any player you want that is still available. If you do not make a choice within two minutes, you will be given the highest ranked available player on your pre-draft list. If you haven't got a pre-draft list and you haven't chosen a player within two minutes, the computer will randomly choose for you.
So I think that is it for now. If you have any questions that I haven't covered here then please feel free to contact me on Twitter.
Anipal GeeGees Cup

The Anipal GeeGees Cup starts on Saturday!
The start of the Anipal GeeGees Cup is only two sleeps away (lockout is at 11am AEST on Saturday) and fields for our first meeting have been released. You can find them (and all fields throughout the competition) at the Racing Australia website. Click here for Randwick's (Sydney) fields for Saturday, and here for the meeting at Flemington (Melbourne) on Sunday. Please note that the times listed are local time for New South Wales and Victoria. The main races this weekend are the Epsom Handicap, the Metropolitan, and Flight Stakes at Randwick, and the Turnbull Stakes at Flemington.
If you would like to watch the races to cheer your horses on you have several options. The broadcast arrangements for Australian racing are a hot mess and as a consequence, Sydney and Melbourne races are shown on different channels. On free-to-air, Saturday's Sydney races will be shown on 7 Two and Sunday's Flemington races is on the racing.com free-to-air service. Racing.com is also broadcast on Foxtel on channel 522. Foxtel will show the Sydney races on Sky Thoroughbred Central (channel 521). You can also watch online - the Randwick races are on the Racing NSW website and Flemington will be on the racing.com site.
Good luck with your stables!

I played fantasy AFL - what's different in Star Stable?
Most of us who are involved in the Anipal GeeGees Cup also played fantasy AFL and the basic concept behind both games is similar. There are, however, several differences.
GREEN DOTS
Like with the AFL, green dots indicate horses who will be racing at the next meeting. Green dots will usually appear on your screen the day before lockout. But unlike fantasy AFL, the number of green dots and red dots you have doesn't really matter. It is extremely unlikely that you will ever have 10 green dots. This is perfectly normal and you needn't worry even if you have more red dots than green dots. Theoretically, a stable with only one horse running at a particular meeting could score higher than a stable with multiple runners. The thing to remember is that a racehorse is not like a footballer who can back up week to week. Most horses will only start two or three times during the competition.
HORSE VALUES
Horse values only rise in Star Stable, they never go down. There are no breakevens and if a horse puts in a bad run it will not lose you any money from your budget.
NO HEAD TO HEAD MATCH-UPS
The Anipal GeeGees Cup is just a straight league and is ranked according to how much prizemoney you accumulate. There are no head to head match-ups in Star Stable. There is also no final series - every stable plays right to the end and has a chance of winning our league.
WILDCARD TRADES
Just like fantasy AFL, you can make two trades during each trade period. But Star Stable gives you the opportunity of making a third wildcard trade on two occasions. When you use your wildcard trades is entirely up to you.
NO EMERGENCIES/BENCH
In Star Stable there is no bench so you do not have to choose any emergencies. There is also no vice stable champion so I cannot emphasise strongly enough to MAKE SURE YOUR STABLE CHAMPION HAS A GREEN DOT. If your stable champion has a red dot, you will not have an opportunity to win double the prizemoney for that meeting.
NO LIVE UPDATES
I am not going to lie - this is a major flaw with Star Stable. The organisers claimed they were going to include this feature a while back but they didn't, and I do not foresee that they will include it this time. The major drawback of this is that you will not be able to see everyone else's stable (and what horses they had running) until several hours after the meeting has finished. This makes it hard to know how everyone else is faring while the race meeting is in progress. But the beauty of Twitter is that we can release any information when we want so feel free to announce what horses you have starting at each meeting if you like. I will be doing so (after lockout, anyway *fiercely protects his stable from prying eyes*)!
With only a week to go until the start of the Anipal GeeGees Cup, you should be close to finalising your stable. Remember you can always contact me on Twitter if you have any questions.
